Study abroad has always been something I've been interested in. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to go to Germany because that's where my Oma (grandma) is from, recently I just traveled there. So, study abroad seems like a great way to quench my thirst for seeing a new land and getting to learn/experience a new culture. With that said, on September 15th I took the light rail down to the Tempe campus and attended the "Study Abroad Fair."
At this fair I learned the steps one must take in order to come closer to embarking on a once in a lifetime experience. Basically, I have to attend a Study Abroad 101 session (check), browse through the various programs and pick one, meet with a coordinator and then apply for the program. I was also informed of the eligibility requirements which shouldn't be a problem. At the end of this semester I will have over 30 credit hours, so technically if my GPA is high enough I could probablly embark on a study abroad program next semester. But I doubt it, technically I might be eligble but it probablly woudn't happen until I'm actually a sophmore.
However, the costs may put a damper on my study abroad dreams. Although tution costs are the same (basically the same as if I went to ASU) I would have to pay for housing, food, tickets and books. Although their are scholarships available so I might get lucky if I put my mind to it!
I talked to various instructors and students. It was very informative and I found myself more and more wanting to take the risk of flying (I have a serious of phobia of flying and heights) to travel to some far and distant land.
All in all I really loved this passport activity! It was really awesome. I love the idea that I could travel to some distant land full of so much history all under the guise of studying and furthering my education. I really learned a lot and walked away from this activity with a lot of information and sources on Study Abroad programs. I also got a ASU backpack that they mentioned in an email I recieved, so looks like I won't have to waste money on another one!
Kudos to this activity! It was AWESOME and renewed my faith in the Passport Activities that was lost. :)

Downtown Devil Expo (Activity 1)
The Downtown Devil Expo...
I found out about this activity via the word document on the passport section on blackboard and also due to the bombardment of posters and signs scattered across the downtown campus. Before deciding I wanted to attend this activity I looked it up online and read what it was about...it looked like it would be pretty interesting and fun to say the least.
Sadly, I was kind of let down by this activity :( I thought there would be some really cool clubs and school organizations there. Some of the out of school organization there were interesting. One outdoor organization in particular stood out, because I love the outdoors and nature. I'm sure I'll be looking more into this exciting outdoor organization! However, the school clubs and organizations were kind of a let down. I thought there would be a wider variety but there wasn't. It was basically a bunch of sororitys and organizations like student government, and things dealing with certain majors (*note* no clubs dealing with criminal justice). I talked to a few sororitys but I didn't talk to all of them because they all kind of looked like I wouldn't fit in. One table had their reresentatives dressed in what can only be described their finest "club clothing."
Granted I did learn a few things from this activity. I learned that my major (Criminal Justice) isn't as represented on campus I would like. I learned about a cool and adventurous outdoor club that will probablly present many fun experiences with nature. And I also got a free frisbee from the ASU Republican club, and have enjoyed watching my two puppies chase around the house after it! I've also had to climb up on my house and get it off the roof cause someone threw it up there.
All in all I felt the Downtown Devil Expo wasn't what the website and posters made it out to be. But I did learn a few things about a handful of organizations and came away with a new toy for my dogs. So I guess it was an average afternoon. I'm looking to the next activity that I embark on.
